Senior Rowing

Captain's Welcome

Welcome to senior rowing at LMHBC!

LMHBC is such an incredible club, full of passionate and highly motivated people, and joining was easily one of the best decisions we made in our first year. Whether you want to compete and train regularly, simply make friends and get fitter, or yell at some obnoxious rowers (we always need more coxes!), there is a space in LMHBC for you.

We have an exciting year ahead of us, with our training leading up to two major bumps campaigns - Torpids (Hilary Term) and Summer VIIIs (Trinity Term) for some healthy college rivalry, and a chance to stake our name against other Oxford rowing clubs. Before that however, we've got our eyes set on having some rapid boats in Autumn IVs and for those interested in small boats, entries to the Isis Winter and Summer Leagues will be plentiful!

With regular training sessions throughout the week, and access to singles, doubles, and pairs, there should be enough to keep even the keenest rower satisfied. We are also planning on entering our senior boats to a number of external races this year, such as Bedford/Quintin Head, to diversify training objectives and catch a glimpse of some new scenery!

If you have any questions about senior rowing at LMH, your prior experience, or how to get involved in university wide rowing, don't hesitate to get in contact with us!

Our First Boats

Our first VIII's have had many successes in recent years – currently, our women's boat (W1) has a solid standing in Division II for Torpids and Summer VIIIs, and our open boat (M1) is racing at the top of Division II in both events. Alongside training for bumps races, our first boats often compete and excel in external regattas, such as WEHoRR (2023), Bedford Regatta (2023) and Worcester regatta (2025), giving athletes a taste for rowing outside Oxford.

Being in a first boat gives you the opportunity to train and compete at a higher level, alongside like-minded people who are determined to ensure that the crew performs to the best of its ability. Though it requires discipline, resilience and commitment, the experience of rowing in our first boats is unique and extremely rewarding, and you are guaranteed to make friends for life.

We have a large range of experience, from people who have been rowing for years to others who only started a few months prior, so whatever your experience, there is always potential to make a first boat.

Members of our first and lower boats have an extremely close relationship, attending socials together, and subbing into respective outings throughout the year. Additionally, though training schedules differ, many members erg together, and all sides of the club come out to support racing crews during bumps week.

We hope that those who row in our lower boats remain with us for multiple years, and for those who wish to, trial for our first boats.

Our Lower Boats

At LMHBC we value our lower boats just as much as our first boats. Historically, we have put out out anywhere between one and six lower boats for major bumps races.

While we believe having a strong, successful first boat program is important for the club, we also recognise that our athletes are students who have extremely busy schedules. This is why we aim to offer a lower commitment alternative to first boat racing, while maintaining the standards of training necessary to compete and excel in events.

External Racing

Our crews regularly and successfully race outside of Oxford. Our M1 crew recently won the Bedford Amateur Regatta 2023 (open category), W1 placed third at Bedford Eights Head 2023, and a W2 composite crew were division winners at Women’s Eights Head of the River Race (WEHORR) 2023.
