TorpHeads

With Torpids being cancelled this year due to flooding, our first boats instead took part in 'TorpHeads', a time trial down the Isis.

Throughout the term, our crews have been putting in the hours on the ergs, and this has paid off massively, with both men's and women's crews racing extremely well considering how little water time was available. The outstanding result of the day was earned by W1 who finished 5th in the women's category, with a time of 5:34. They not only beat 8 Torpids Div I crews, and 13 crews ahead of them in the current Torpids standings, but also two mens crews including St Hugh's - a Torpids Div II crew.

M1 also rowed valiantly, finished middle of the standings and putting them in a brilliant position for Summer VIII's.

We are extremely proud of all our crews, and are excited to continue training and racing with big ambitions for next term. We also hope to see some lower boats competing soon, giving our newer members their first taste of bumps racing!

A huge thank you to our S-status coxes Viv Leong and Charlotte Rumney for getting our boats out and racing, and to those who came and showed their support down at the boathouse!

Gloucester trip

This weekend our crews were able to get some much needed water time by taking a trip down to Gloucester.

The weather held out for most of the afternoon, and we had a lovely day training up new rowers and coxes, as well as getting blades back into the hands of our seniors who were very happy to get out of the erg shed for a while. We even managed to catch a beautiful sunset to end a day of hard work!

A big thank you to Mark for trailering us down, and to Gloucester Rowing Club for hosting us on their river!

Tamesis regatta

LMHBC entered one men’s and one women’s boat in Tamesis (novice) Regatta this year.

In a valiant race on the first day, the women were leading by over a length until a disastrous crab allowed Hilda’s to win. The novices raced again on Thursday, narrowly losing to a strong Magdalen crew.

Our men’s novices raced on the Wednesday, losing to St Catz. They were lucky enough to get a bye-in on Thursday, giving them a final chance to practice the course. Practice clearly makes perfect, and the crew defeated New College in their first race of the day. Their second race of the day saw a strong performance from the boys, but unfortunately they were beaten by Mansfield.

A massive thank you to Linacre College Boat Club for organising the regatta, it was an excellent introduction to racing for the novices and they show great promise for the season ahead!

Wallingford Head

This weekend, the women took part in their first external regatta of the year at Wallingford Head. After a week of training, the crew felt more than ready to take on the 4.2km course and to test the waters of their race plan.

After a very cold rigging session, the 8+ had an extremely successful race, finishing as the second fastest college crew. The amazing performance of this race is a reflection of all the hard work the senior have been putting in - both in on- and off-water training sessions. Wallingford Head was a great introduction to the head races which we are hoping to enter this year and all the rowers enjoyed the beautiful stretch of water at Wallingford.

A massive thank you to Mark, our boatman, for trailering and helping out on the race, along with Molly who braved the arctic conditions for us. Also a massive shoutout to the Harry and the men’s coach Luke, whose cheers from Brookes boathouse gave us the extra boost we needed to finish the race!

Lion & Chough

On 21st November, the women’s side entered the first ever Lion and Chough event. It was an afternoon of side-by-side racing from Longbridges, providing yet another opportunity for new and returning members to race together.

The senior 8+ and the 4+ had huge successes, winning both their events and are eagerly awaiting their medals in Hilary!

The next day saw the novice women’s 8+ take to the water as a final practice before Novice Regatta. As their first experience of racing, the novice crew made the coaches and captains proud, as they made the most out of the opportunity. They fought a valiant battle, however sadly did not get to race past the first round. It was a great introduction to racing and preparation for the Michaelmas Novice Regatta!

IWL A

Our crews had a great start to the racing year at IWL on Sunday, seeing some really positive results!

The Open 8+ came a solid 12th in their category, which is an amazing result considering they two novices in the boat - so a massive well done to Nick and Harry! The women’s crew stormed down the river with both the 8+ and 4+ coming 3rd in their categories. We also had 1x representation, with Fergus returning to his sculling days and placing 3rd.

These are amazing results and a reflection of the intention with which our seniors have approached this term already! Let’s keep the momentum going for the rest of the year, YEAH LMH 💛💙
