Novice Rowing
Vice-Captain's Welcome
Welcome to novice rowing at LMHBC!
First of all, don’t be put off by the fact that you haven’t rowed or coxed before. Most people join the club with no previous experience, and we teach you everything from scratch.
In terms of land training, the first term is about building base fitness: we will run group erg sessions (most people come to two or three per week), but you can also incorporate running, cycling, swimming, strength training and anything else that helps to add some variety and fit around your schedule. You’ll also learn the basics on the water in preparation for the Michaelmas novice regatta – a very low-pressure opportunity to race against other college crews who are also new to rowing. In later terms, we train towards both inter-college bumps racing (Torpids in Hilary and Summer Eights in Trinity) and external regattas, providing a range of opportunities to race throughout the year.
Different people choose to train at different intensities, so you can balance rowing around your workload and other interests. You can essentially row as much or as little as you want to; our first boats are at competitive positions in the bumps divisions and train regularly, but we also have second and third boats with lower time commitments that are consistently succeeding in bumps.
As well as this, the boat club is one of the largest societies at LMH with a strong sense of support and community fostered by weekly socials, both within the club and with other colleges, making it a great way to meet new people and build friendships.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We can’t wait to start rowing with you!
